Single-digit wind chills can’t freeze out Columbus St. Patrick’s Day parade

Single-digit wind chills and heavy snow showers failed to freeze out the luck of the Irish Tuesday as the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade marched through a bitter late-winter storm. Despite the brutal cold, participants and spectators bundled in layers of green to keep the tradition alive, proving that even a historic chill could not dampen the community's Irish spirit. For some, the sub-freezing temperatures were a small price to pay for a milestone celebration. Connor Hockenbery, 17, spent the morning shivering under a green blanket to mark his "golden" birthday — turning 17 on the 17th. Hockenbery said he has attended the parade every year of his life since leaving the hospital as a newborn. "It is absolutely freezing, but I gotta be here," Hockenbery said. "I feel like I gotta be here." The procession featured a long list of entries, including the Shamrock Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Columbus Fire Department, local police and various elected officials. Marchers navigated through heavy flurries as a leprechaun provided high energy to distract from the plummeting temperatures.
