Video Description
While fighting for the Union Army, James Garfield came face to face with the realities of slavery, strengthening his belief in abolition. "This is my hope," he wrote, "that when we shall return to civil life, there shall go up an unrelenting cry for freedom."
Following the war, the fate of the formerly enslaved would become a major cause of his candidacy and brief presidency.
