Symptoms can begin years before diagnosis, and many people mistake them for normal aging or stress. Here are the most common earliest warning signs: ⚠️ 1. Loss or Reduction of Smell (Hyposmia) One of the earliest neurological changes. You may notice: Difficulty smelling foods like bananas, pickles, or coffee Reduced enjoyment of flavors No sinus or allergy explanation 👉 This can occur 5–10 years before movement symptoms. ⚠️ 2. Small Handwriting (Micrographia) A very classic early sign. Changes include: Letters becoming progressively smaller Crowded words Hand fatigue while writing This reflects early problems with motor control circuits. ⚠️ 3. Subtle Tremor at Rest Often begins on one side of the body. Examples: Finger twitching Thumb “pill-rolling” movement Mild shaking when hand is relaxed Early tremor may disappear during movement. ⚠️ 4. Slowed Movement (Bradykinesia) Many patients notice: Taking longer to walk or get dressed Reduced arm swing Feeling “heavy” or stiff Friends or family may notice this before the person does. ⚠️ 5. Sleep Changes (REM Sleep Behavior Disorder) Early Parkinson’s can affect sleep regulation. Possible signs: Acting out dreams Kicking or punching during sleep Talking or yelling while asleep This can occur years before diagnosis. ⚠️ 6. Constipation or Digestive Slowing The disease can affect the autonomic nervous system early. Symptoms include: Chronic constipation Slower digestion Bloating These may appear long before tremor. ⚠️ 7. Mood Changes (Depression or Anxiety) Brain chemistry changes can lead to: Loss of motivation Increased anxiety Emotional flattening These symptoms are neurological — not just psychological. ⚠️ 8. Soft or Low Voice People may notice: Speaking more quietly Monotone speech Being asked to repeat themselves Dr. Jin Sung is a Chiropractic Physician who specializes in the management of complex chronic conditions in Massachusetts, 30 minutes north of Boston.
