The Parachute That Carried Britain’s Paratroopers Into WWII When Britain created its airborne forces during the Second World War, one piece of equipment would become central to every operation: the X-Type parachute. Designed to carry British paratroopers into battle, this parachute was used in some of the most famous airborne operations of the war — from North Africa and Sicily to Normandy and Arnhem. In this episode of WW2 Wayfinder, we explore the history and design of the British X-Type parachute, the equipment that delivered the soldiers of the British Airborne Forces into combat behind enemy lines. Developed in the early years of the war as Britain built its airborne capability, the X-Type parachute became standard issue for the men of the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions, as well as other Allied airborne units. It was the X Type and it's Quick Release Box that would set it apart from the American T-5 Parachute assembly and was through the help of the German's a feature that would eventually become a mandatory component of the US parachute assembly for Airborne Troops with the revised T-7 Parachute as used by the 17th Airborne in March 1945 to jump the Rhine as part of Operation Varsity.
