It wasn’t cut by an airstrike. And it wasn’t some construction worker with a shovel hitting the wrong fiber line. Tehran shut it off themselves. In this video I explain why Iran repeatedly turns off the internet during wars and protests, and why the regime increasingly treats the internet as part of the battlespace. Cutting internet access serves several purposes for the Iranian government: • It limits battle-damage assessment by preventing smartphone footage from spreading online. • It reduces intelligence risks from foreign apps and communications platforms. • It slows panic and economic disruption during wartime. • And most importantly, it prevents anti-regime protests from coordinating at scale. This isn’t a temporary improvisation. Iran has been building the infrastructure for selective internet shutdowns and whitelisting access for years, allowing the state to keep its own communications running while the population goes dark. In other words, this isn’t just censorship. It’s battlespace management, internal security, and narrative control.
