Video Description
This CAT 657 Scraper cylinder rod rolled in with the eye completely blown apart and in desperate need of replacing. The job is to remove the damage, machine and weld on a new eye and bring it back to spec.
The job starts by cutting the damaged eye off the rod using the oxy torch. The rod is then set up in the lathe to machine a new spigot. Interrupted cuts during machining add an extra challenge and we have to be careful not to damage tooling so Kurtis makes careful adjustments and controlled passes to get it done.
With the rod prepped it’s time to machine a new eye from a flame-cut piece of 90 mm Bisalloy 80 high tensile plate. The eye is set up in the milling machine to drill a hole for the spigot, spot drill for the live centre, then rotated to drill and tap the grease port.
The eye then gets fitted to the rod but additional weld preparation is needed before the eye is tacked and then fully welded on the rotators using CIG Verticor wire. With the welding complete, the eye bore is machined to final size. A snap ring groove is cut, along with machining a relief and chamfers before the final paint goes on.
With the new eye machined, welded, and finished to spec, the rod comes back into shape with correct geometry and clean bores. What arrived broken and worn leaves as a fully restored part ready for the demands of heavy earthmoving work again.
