Macalester College Animal Experiment Ban

Published: March 18, 2026
Video Description
Many universities have replaced animal laboratories in psychology courses with modern, humane teaching methods.
But Macalester College continues to use rats in introductory psychology classes. In these experiments, animals are deprived of water and placed in Skinner boxes where they must work for water. College officials have also acknowledged that the rats are eventually killed with carbon dioxide.
Across the country, including at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, the University of Minnesota, and many others, universities have already adopted nonanimal alternatives.
Students support this change as well. A national survey found that 83% of college students object to using animals when alternatives are available and the animals will be killed.
Help us encourage Macalester College to end the use of animals in psychology courses and adopt humane alternatives.
