From video: Why Do I Struggle SO Much With This Shape?
Published: February 15, 2026

Video Description

What is it with this form? I like bottles, I collect those made by other makers, yet whenever I try to produce my own they always feel 'off', the shapes are askew, the proportions aren't right and I think it's time that I really invest in one specific idea and make a good run of them. In this video I'm throwing that 'base' shape and I'd like to hear your thoughts about what works and what doesn't. Ultimately, these are decorative vessels, pieces to flute a few branches in or some dry stems and flowers and once I find a shape I'm content with, I'd love to scale it up somewhat, to create some more monolithic, standalone objects. This week, I'm covering the throwing of these forms and next week, I'll show the trimming, which I reckon will be a slightly more convoluted process than I imagine due to their narrow necks and bulbous bodies. I'll have to crack the chucks out in order to find one that fits this vase properly. Thanks so much for watching!
