Of course, you can absolutely make this Sidecar with any orange curaçao, triple sec, or Cointreau… depends on your level of willingness to geek out and make the DIY stuff.
Now, about the drink:
The classic Sidecar is usually built 2:1:1 and sometimes served with a sugar rim to offset the tartness. Personally, I prefer dialing in the balance directly in the glass. I boost the orange liqueur a bit and add a teaspoon of simple syrup—no sugar rim—so the cocktail keeps its brightness but gains a nicer weight and smoother texture.
My Sidecar spec:
1.5 oz Cognac
1 oz Orange liqueur
0.75 oz Lemon juice
1 teaspoon Simple syrup
Shaken • Served up • Orange zest
