In a small village about four hours from the capital, we met two friends of Ayham who welcomed us into their community. When we walked through the village marketplace, word spread quickly, within minutes hundreds of people had gathered to meet us. People were incredibly warm and curious, asking questions, taking photos, and even gifting us sweets, fruits, and other treats. It was one of those moments that reminds you how powerful genuine human connection can be. From there we continued our road trip to the ancient city of Babylon, once one of the great centers of civilization in Mesopotamia. Today the ruins sit in a peaceful landscape, watched over by one of Saddam Hussein’s many palaces, which he built on a hill overlooking the historic site. Interestingly, despite building the palace, he reportedly only stayed there twice. We wrapped up our journey by visiting the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, two of the most important spiritual centers in the Shia Muslim world. Ending the trip there added a powerful cultural and historical dimension to an already unforgettable road trip through Iraq.
