In this video, I’ll show you how to knit easy newborn beanie hats using the Magic Loop technique on circular needles — no double-pointed needles needed!
I use one basic newborn hat pattern and show you 3 different variations:
You’ll also see how the pattern works with different yarn weights, so you can use what you already have in your stash.

NEW BORN BEANIE HAT PATTERN
Aprox: 66 yds of #3 weight or baby yarn. 3.5mm circular needles 30in long. Longer is easier to knit using the magic loop.
Aprox: 66 yds of #4 worsted weight yarn. 4.5mm circular needles 30 in long.
Gauge:
Baby yarn #3 weight 14 rows x 10 sts = 2”x 2”
Worsted yarn #4 weight 12 rows x 7 sts = 2”x 2”
Cast on 72 stitches for baby yarn #3 or Cast on 60 stitches for worsted yarn #4
Join in the round
Knit 4” from CO using magic loop method
RIBBED EDGE VARIATION FOR BOTH YARN WEIGHTS:
K2P2 FOR 4 ROWS then continue to knit all stitches for 4”
ADDING CHANGE OF COLOUR VARIATION:
ON 8th row from bottom change yarn colour by tying on new yarn. Knit for 6 rows. Add original yarn colour by tying on and cutting accent yarn and continue knitting for 4” from CO.
DECREASES:
Round 1: *K6, K2tog* repeat
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *K5, K2tog* repeat
Round 4: Knit
FOR WORSTED WEIGHT YARN START DECREASES AT ROUND 5:
Round 5: *K4, K2tog* repeat
Round 7: K3, K2tog* repeat
Round 8: Knit
Round 9: *K2, K2tog* repeat
Round 10: Knit
Round 11: *K1, K2tog* repeat
Round 12: Knit
Round 13: *k2 tog* repeat
Cut yarn leaving enough for sewing up top. Weave end through loops on needle. Remove needle and cinch up and pull snug. Secure end and sew in yarn
ADDING KNITTED BOW VARIATION:
Cast on 20 sts
Row 1 Knit Row 2 Purl
Repeat rows 1 & 2 3 more times for a total of 8 row including first Row 1 & 2.
Cast off. Sew ends together. Gather up middle of bow. Use same colour yarn to wind yarn around middle of bow. Secure with a knot and leave enough of a tail to sew onto hat. Add button if desired.
