Published: March 26, 2026

Video Description

In this tutorial, I show you how to knit the Maverick Wave blanket and customize it to any size you like. This pattern is simple to follow and creates a beautiful wave texture that really comes to life after blocking. I walk you through how to calculate your cast on stitches so you can make this blanket for a baby, a throw, or a full-size blanket. You will also learn how to add your own creative touch by incorporating accent rows and texture changes to make the design uniquely yours. In this video, I also demonstrate how to do a Russian yarn join for a smooth, nearly invisible transition between yarns. To finish, I show you how to steam block your blanket to enhance and define the wave pattern for a professional-looking result. This is a relaxing and rewarding project that is perfect for using your favorite color combinations and making something truly special. This video may contain affiliate links. It’s perfect for worsted weight yarn and gives a soft, flowing result. Yarn: #4 Medium (Worsted) – use Ombre yarn or as many colors of your choice. I used about 650 yds for my blanket. Needles: 4 mm (US 6) circulars, 32” or longer Gauge aprox: 18 sts and 20 rows = 4" in stockinette (optional) Finished Size after Blocking with : 36x39” (91.4x 99.1cm) (easily adjustable) ■ Pattern Notes Each wave repeat is 18 stitches wide, so you can adjust your blanket width by adding or subtracting repeats of 18 stitches. This pattern includes optional textured bands and color-play sections for creative variation. ■ Cast On sts for the size of blanket you desire. I cast on 144 sts (or any multiple of 18) plus 10 sts for left and right borders (total 154 sts). Knit 10 rows in garter stitch (knit every row) for the bottom border. ■ Maverick Wave Section Repeat the following 4-row pattern: Row 1 (RS): Knit across Row 2 (WS): Purl across Row 3 (RS): *K2tog 3 times, (YO, K1) 6 times, K2tog 3 times* – repeat from * to end. Row 4 (WS): Purl across This 4-row repeat forms one wave. Change color every 4 or 20 rows, as desired or use ombre yarn. ■ Optional Texture Rows (make it your own!) After every 3–5 wave repeats, you may insert one of the following bands: A. Seed Stitch Band: Row 1: *K1, P1*; Row 2: *P1, K1*. Repeat twice (4 rows). B. Garter Ridge Divider: Knit 2–4 rows before resuming wave pattern. ■ Color Ideas • Classic baby: white, sky blue, mint, butter yellow • Retro: coral, teal, mustard, cream• Modern boho: rose, linen, olive, blush Ocean: deep teal, aqua, pale blue, cream ■ Side & Top Borders Keep 5 stitches in garter stitch at each edge throughout the blanket for neat sides. For the top and bottom borders, knit 10 garter rows to visually match the 5 garter stitches along the sides. End after a Row 4 of the wave section, then knit 10 garter rows before binding off loosely. ✂■ Finishing Weave in all yarn ends neatly along color transitions. Lightly steam block to enhance the wave shape. ■ To Adjust Size Width: add or subtract 18 stitches (≈ 4.5”) Length: add or remove wave repeats as desired.
