Internal snapping hip syndrome, also known as coxa saltans interna, occurs when the iliopsoas tendon moves over bony structures at the front of the hip, creating a snapping or clicking sensation during motion. While many people experience painless snapping, others develop discomfort, tightness, or irritation in the front of the hip and groin, especially with activities such as walking, running, or rising from a seated position.
The good news is that most cases respond very well to conservative rehabilitation. Targeted exercise can help reduce excessive tension in the hip flexors, improve strength of the glutes and deep hip stabilizers, and restore more efficient movement patterns. A structured rehab approach typically focuses on mobility, gradual strengthening, and neuromuscular control so the tendon tracks more smoothly and symptoms decrease over time. When performed consistently and progressed appropriately, exercise-based rehab is often the most effective first-line strategy for relieving pain and improving long-term hip function without the need for invasive treatment.
