Costochondritis is a condition involving irritation and inflammation of the cartilage where the ribs attach to the sternum (breastbone). This can lead to localized chest wall pain that is often sharp, aching, or pressure-like and may worsen with deep breathing, coughing, or certain upper-body movements. Although the symptoms can be uncomfortable and sometimes alarming, costochondritis is typically a musculoskeletal issue rather than a cardiac one.
Physical therapy and targeted rehabilitation exercises can play an important role in recovery. Treatment commonly focuses on improving thoracic spine mobility, restoring normal rib and shoulder movement, reducing muscular tension, and gradually reintroducing load to the chest and upper body. Gentle mobility drills, posture correction, breathing mechanics, and progressive strengthening can help decrease irritation and improve overall function.
