🚩 In the mid-13th century, the Scottish coastline was a volatile frontier where two kingdoms collided. King Alexander III of Scotland sought to unify his realm by purchasing or seizing the Hebrides, territories held for centuries by the Norwegian Crown.
For the aging King Haakon IV of Norway, the stakes were nothing less than the survival of his maritime empire. Any concession to the Scots threatened Norse prestige across the North Sea. Tensions escalated as Scottish forces harassed Norse-held islands, finally prompting Haakon to mobilize one of the largest Viking fleets ever assembled to reassert his ancestral authority in the west.
