Video Description
Retopologizing meshes full of holes, like chainmail or 3D scans, can be incredibly frustrating. Traditional retopology tools often struggle with objects that aren't continuous surfaces.
In this Blender tip, we explore a powerful technique for remeshing complex geometry using Signed Distance Fields (SDF) inside Geometry Nodes.
Instead of relying on Blender’s standard remesh modifier, this method converts a mesh into an SDF grid and then rebuilds it as a clean, watertight mesh. This makes it much easier to perform retopology afterward using tools like Poly Pen, Contours, or RetopoFlow.
This workflow is especially useful when working with:
• Chainmail or meshes with many holes
• Photogrammetry scans
• Messy topology from imported assets
• Objects that traditional remesh tools struggle with
Sometimes the fastest way to solve a complex modeling problem is to rethink the workflow entirely. Converting messy geometry into a clean remesh can save hours of manual retopology.
