Western Style
Foundation chain: created from chain with YU
Knit:
Right-handed — insert left to right, yarn under (LTR, YU)
Left-handed — insert right to left, yarn under (RTL, YU)
Purl:
Right-handed — insert right to left, yarn over (RTL, YO)
Left-handed — insert left to right, yarn over (LTR, YO)
Japanese / Eastern Style
Foundation chain: created from chain with YO
Knit:
Right-handed — insert right to left, yarn over (RTL, YO)
Left-handed — insert left to right, yarn over (LTR, YO)
Purl:
Right-handed — insert left to right, yarn under (LTR, YU)
Left-handed — insert right to left, yarn under (RTL, YU)
Key: Both styles create identical knit fabric. The difference is stitch formation direction and yarn wrap.
