This doesn’t look like Europe — but it is. We’re driving through Europe’s only true desert on the first day of our overland journey with our boys. Spain isn’t what we expected. On day one of our journey through southern Spain, we find ourselves driving through the Tabernas Desert, the only true desert in Europe. With its dry climate, rugged hills, and cinematic landscapes, it feels more like Arizona or California than Europe. As we travel deeper into the desert, we search for a place to camp, spot Spanish ibex in the hills, and follow the coastal highway past Almería, where thousands of greenhouses stretch across the plain in what’s known as the Sea of Plastic — one of Europe’s most productive agricultural regions. For this part of the journey, we’re joined by our sons Pete and Dan, making this leg of the trip even more meaningful as we explore, drive, and slow down together.
