Our first days in England didn’t go quite as planned. After a three-day marathon drive from southern Spain to Calais, we crossed the English Channel and arrived in Dover — only to face tight, narrow country roads, heavy February rain, and campsites that were closed for the season. Finding a place to park the truck in winter proved harder than expected. Meanwhile, Pete’s Land Rover Defender needed urgent repairs before its next chapter — worn universal joints, a new driver-side seatbelt, and windshield wipers all had to be addressed before we ship our overland truck back to North America. While waiting for the Defender to go into the shop, we explored Dover Castle — one of England’s most important historic fortresses. From medieval royal chambers and ancient tapestries to the Roman lighthouse and Saxon church, Dover Castle spans nearly 2,000 years of history. Deep beneath the castle, we toured the World War II tunnels where Operation Dynamo was coordinated — the evacuation of more than 338,000 Allied soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940. Civilian fishing boats and pleasure craft, known as the “Little Ships of Dunkirk,” crossed these waters under fire to bring soldiers home. Rain, mud, narrow lanes — and some of the most powerful history in England.
