It’s one of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes. I wanted to create something totally unique, though. The foreground shifts and changes with the rising tides. Driftwood and rocks are strewn about, leading the viewer into the scene. My references showed some of this, but honestly left something to be desired - so I just made it up! Using physical props can help create something dynamic and unique, but it gives the artist a push to bring that extra level of realism to the scene. By using sticks and weeds, I could see exactly how the light would fall across these forms, and compose the way I wanted. You’ll never see Milford Sound quite like this!
