From video: Yarn Terms Explained: Ply, Twist, Weight, and Gauge for Fiber Artists
Published: February 26, 2026

Video Description

Yarn terminology can feel confusing, even for experienced makers. Understanding how ply, twist, yarn weight, and gauge work together helps artists choose materials with more control and predictability. Ply refers to how many strands are twisted together, while twist describes how tightly they are spun; both affect strength, texture, and stitch definition. Yarn weight describes strand thickness, not physical weight, using the Craft Yarn Council system from 0 (lace) to 7 (jumbo). Gauge measures stitches and rows per inch and is influenced by tension, tools, and technique, making swatching an essential step. Knowing these fundamentals supports better material choices and more consistent results in knitting, crochet, and other fiber work.
