From video: The Degas Pastel Technique: Monotype, Casein Fixative, and Layered Color
Published: March 26, 2026

Video Description

Edgar Degas developed a pastel technique that combined drawing, printmaking, painting, and photography. Working in layers, he shifted between wet and dry applications, juxtaposed unblended color, and used monotypes as the foundation for many of his compositions. The result was a surface with heightened color and controlled light and shadow. Artists can explore related methods by creating monoprints from photographs using glass or plastic plates, ink, and a baren or spoon for burnishing. Casein medium and casein-based spray fixative allow for wet techniques and layered pastel applications.
