In this video, we explore the troubling reality of India's judicial system through the story of Sopan Narsinga Gaikwad, who was ensnared in a court battle over a piece of land for nearly 50 years. Despite a favorable ruling initially, his case got bounced between courts, revealing a significant backlog affecting 5.3 crore pending cases nationwide. This delay is exacerbated by a shortage of judges; India has only about 21,000 judges for 1.4 billion people, leading to prolonged legal proceedings. Moreover, many candidates fail to pass judicial exams, compounding the staffing crisis. We highlight how government departments contribute significantly to litigation, often prolonging simple disputes. Finally, the Supreme Court’s focus has shifted towards minor appeals rather than crucial constitutional matters, undermining its original purpose. Without major reforms in staffing, training, and government litigation habits, the backlog will only grow, and justice will remain unserved.
