In early January, we travelled to Dzongu in North Sikkim to attend the Orange Festival - Chalum Damroo. Known as the gateway to Mayal Lyang (the hidden paradise), Dzongu quickly became one of the most special places we’ve experienced in all our travels.
This leg of our journey was thoughtfully curated by Muhaan, who helped us experience Dzongu beyond tourism - through community, culture, and conversation.
The Orange Festival was a vibrant celebration of harvest, history, and Lepcha identity - absolutely worth planning your Sikkim trip around if you’re visiting in January.
We met Seela Lepcha, a young filmmaker documenting Lepcha stories and helping build a community museum. We hiked to Hee Gyathang Monastery with Gaebu Lepcha, learning about local flora, fauna, and folk stories along the way. We also visited the traditional Lepcha bamboo cane bridge “ru-soam” with Ugen Palzor Lepcha, whose organisation has done tremendous work in the region.
For our final days, we stayed at Mayal Lyang Homestay with Gyatso Lepcha, a key voice in the Save Teesta movement, working to protect Dzongu from large hydroelectric projects on the Teesta river.
Dzongu isn’t just an offbeat destination in Sikkim - it’s Lepcha land. A place rooted in sustainability, community, and living in harmony with nature.
If you’re looking for meaningful travel in Northeast India, cultural experiences in Sikkim, or responsible tourism stories - Dzongu is a journey worth taking, gently and respectfully.
