Hosted by Rozer Gurung and Thupden Lachungpa, we were welcomed into their homes, their families, and their way of life with a kind of warmth that stays with you long after you leave. On our first day, we travelled into Domang Valley - an area usually restricted to tourists. Surrounded by vast alpine landscapes, we felt completely removed from the world we knew. From there, we drove up to Gorala Pass for a high-altitude picnic (and ate way too many momo). That evening, we met a local yak herder and tasted yak milk for the first time - sweet, rich, and unlike anything we’ve had before. Thupden, who is also the head of the Indian Yak Herders Association, shared how climate change is beginning to affect this ancient way of life. This year, the Himalayas saw almost no snowfall - something deeply concerning for the region. Our mornings in Lachung were spent moving from one home to another - cousins, aunties, family - each meal an experience of its own. And every evening, Rozer cooked for us, feeding us not just food, but a sense of belonging. The next day, we drove through Yumthang Valley up to Zero Point. With special permission from the army, we were able to go further… all the way to Gurudongmar Lake (which is actually a part of Lachen. The road that we took is restricted for civilians). Standing there, on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, was a true bucket list moment for us. We ended the day with a dip in the hot springs - the best feeling after a long day in the mountains. On our final day, we were given the honour of becoming patrons of Lachung by the Pippon, and planted maple trees to symbolise our friendship and bond with this place. This wasn’t just a trip. It was an experience of trust, connection, and community.
