Here are some notes that may be helpful in planning your DIY outdoor kitchen... Supplies We Used:
- 2x4’s- pressure treated
- Plywood- rated for outdoor use
- Faux Stone Panels - https://amzn.to/4rKlH7z
- Counter Top - We used a walnut finished butcher block from Floor & Decor since it comes in a 12’ piece and we didn’t want seams in ours.
- 3” Screws- our preference are the star tip deck screws
- Outdoor Cabinets - we used these stainless steel ones - https://bbqguys.sjv.io/aNRKKo
Steps and Tips:
1. Measure your available space and decide on your final dimensions - we are using a section of our existing deck and our finished outdoor kitchen is 12’ long.
2. Measure cabinet width and depth & decide on your spacing… we started at the center and are using 2 door cabinets. You will need to know how you’re finishing the front - we are using faux stone panels and outdoor plywood so you need the depth of each included in your measurements and don't forget your countertop overhang. We wanted a 1 ½” overhang.
3. Starting with the back wall section: Cut 2x4’s to your length and the height you want to use - don’t forget to deduct for your countertop on your finished height. Lay out your frame and screw together- then screw frame to rear wall making sure the frame section is level and square.
4. Then on to the front: You will need to frame out the front wall around the cabinets you are using - we framed ours to be able to slide the premade cabinets in. We did use extra supports on either side of the cabinet doors to help support them.
5. Cut middle supports connecting front and back walls- make sure you space supports at least every 24”. When measuring make sure to add in your countertop overhang and faux stone depth- you need to cut and mount additional horizontal supports for cabinet drawers if you have them.
6. We are using faux stone panels so we installed plywood across the front and sides of our kitchen area to give a flat smooth surface to glue the panels to.
7. After screwing the plywood to the frame, we used a jigsaw or reciprocating saw to cut out the cabinet area - to us it’s easier to cut the hole for the cabinets instead of trying to measure and cut the hole before.
8. Same thing with the faux stone panels - glue to plywood then cut out using a jigsaw.
9. The Countertop Install: Make sure you allow for your overhang - 1-2” is standard. ** If you need to cut your butcher block using a fine tooth blade will give a better finish. Don’t forget to seal or oil your butcher block and allow to dry. Attach the butcher block - don’t overtighten - shim if necessary to level.
****As you complete each step continue to check for level and square - remembering that most decks are built with a slope for drainage so adjust as necessary****
