The murder rate is unbelievable, not to mention how many murders go unsolved. There is a lot of inequality. For example, we stayed in the safest area in Johannesburg, at Rosebank. The neighborhood is full of fancy restaurants and cafes. We guess the danger is very localized in certain neighbourhoods. We joined a Johannesburg tour, and learned a lot about apartheid, and Nelson Mandela in Soweto (Sout Western Township). We figure that was probably the most extreme poverty we've ever seen. South Africa's history is pretty rough, and you can still feel that today. It feels like there's two countries in SA: The safe one for locals and tourists, and the other one where tourists ought to never go. It's a strange feeling.
