Heco 520 Wood Cook Stove
Published: April 1, 2026
Video Description
Our first winter in the off-grid Alaska cabin taught us a hard lesson: a wood stove that needs constant feeding through the night isn't sustainable. I was exhausted, we burned through way more firewood than expected, and something had to change.
So we upgraded to a Heco 520 wood cook stove — and it has genuinely transformed how we heat and cook in this cabin.
In this video we walk through the full two-day install: moving a 900-lb stove across a frozen porch, getting it through the door, running the flue, the curing process, and finally — cooking French toast over a wood fire on a cold Alaska morning.
The Heco 520 is a wood cook stove, meaning we heat the cabin AND cook on it at the same time. It has a built-in oven, a water reservoir that heats 20 gallons of water from the fire's heat, warming drawers, and a cast iron cooktop.
This stove came recommended to us from Mennonite friends and we knew the moment we saw it in their home that it was the one we wanted.
We're so glad Heco partnered with us on this — it's already one of the best additions to this homestead.
