A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, he began his career in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations before transitioning to the FBI. He served as a SWAT operator, sniper, team leader, and instructor, working high-risk missions including hostage rescues, barricaded subjects, and manhunts.
