The GLS has since it's renaming from GL, always claimed to be the S-Class of SUVs. But if we’re honest, the last facelift never quite furthered that cause. Because #Mercedes focused too hard on the EQS SUV, the #GLS was left feeling closer to an oversized E-Class than a true flagship. Particularly inside, and it never quite delivered the step forward you’d expect from Mercedes’ largest SUV.
This 2026 #MercedesBenz GLS Facelift looks like a very different story.
Immediately, the design makes a statement. For the first time as an option, the standard GLS adopts the upright bonnet star — a clear nod to the S-Class — and combined with the new grille, lighting signatures and overall stance, it finally has the presence you expect from a flagship SUV.
The powertrains also follow the S-Class philosophy, copying the flagship's offerings. Across the range, you get updated inline-six petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild hybrid systems, improved efficiency and refinement. And at the top of the range sits the GLS 580 — a V8-powered flagship with 537hp and 750Nm, delivering effortless performance with a clear focus on smoothness and luxury rather than outright aggression.
Mercedes has clearly shifted its focus back towards combustion and traditional luxury!
But this isn’t just a visual update as underneath, Mercedes has reworked the GLS with a clear focus on comfort, refinement and rear-seat luxury — taking inspiration directly from the latest S-Class and Maybach models. Standard AIRMATIC air suspension, optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, and revised chassis tuning all aim to deliver a more composed and genuinely premium driving experience.
Inside, the biggest change is the move to the new MB.OS architecture. With the Superscreen, updated processing hardware, and a significantly expanded sensor suite — including up to 10 cameras, 5 radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors — the GLS is now fully aligned with Mercedes’ latest technology stack.
In this video, we take a full look at the new 2026 Mercedes GLS — covering design, interior, technology and the key updates that finally push it closer to that S-Class SUV promise.
So the question is — has Mercedes finally got the GLS right? Or is the facelift too E Class? Do also check out our GLE video to see how Mercedes has updated its mid-size SUV range alongside this! : https://youtu.be/oiUT5aYQAw8
As for the GLS 63... you'll have to wait a while longer. :)
