Late on 24 November 1943, with the Bougainville campaign still unfolding, five Japanese destroyers were moving through the waters near Cape St. George after a run to Buka, carrying troops one way and vital personnel back toward Rabaul. Waiting for them was Captain Arleigh Burke’s Destroyer Squadron 23, five American destroyers sent out to intercept before the force could slip away under cover of darkness and reach stronger protection by daylight....
