It begins with the dramatic Triumphal Entry, where Jesus rides into the city on a donkey amid crowds waving palm branches and shouting "Hosanna," fulfilling ancient prophecy and publicly declaring His messianic kingship. He then enters the temple and boldly cleanses it, overturning tables of money changers and driving out merchants, condemning the corruption that had turned God's house of prayer into a den of robbers. He curses a barren fig tree as a powerful symbol of judgment on fruitless Israel, teaches about mountain-moving faith, and faces direct challenges to His authority from religious leaders—countering their traps with wisdom that leaves them speechless. In the parables and debates of chapter 22, Jesus intensifies His message of the kingdom's demands and the rejection by Israel's leaders. Through stories like the wicked tenants (who kill the owner's son) and the wedding banquet (where invited guests refuse, leading to outsiders being called—yet one is cast out without proper garment), He warns of divine judgment and the transfer of the kingdom to those who produce fruit. Religious factions try to ensnare Him: Pharisees and Herodians with the tax question ("Render to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's"), Sadducees with a resurrection riddle, and a scribe on the greatest commandment. Jesus masterfully answers each, revealing love for God and neighbor as the core of the Law, while exposing hypocrisy and preparing the way for the cross in this high-stakes confrontation.
