Mark your calendars for an event 1,600 years in the making. Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS), a legendary Kreutz sungrazer, is screaming toward the sun at over one million miles per hour. Discovered by astronomers in Chile, this fragment of an ancient giant is currently brightening at an accelerating rate as it prepares for a harrowing "hairpin turn" just 99,000 miles from the solar surface on April 4th. If it survives the 2-million-degree heat of the solar corona, it could peak at a magnitude of -5—bright enough to potentially be visible in broad daylight.
Watching this event requires both excitement and caution. From April 2nd to 6th, the safest way to witness the perihelion is via NASA’s SOHO satellite stream, as looking directly near the sun can cause permanent blindness. However, if the comet emerges intact, the real show begins for us on Earth between April 8th and 14th. Head outside roughly 45 minutes after sunset, face west, and use the brilliant glow of Venus as your guide. While Southern Hemisphere observers have the best seat in the house, those in the US and UK can still catch a glimpse low on the horizon. Find a dark, open spot away from city lights and prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime view of this silent traveler returning from the deep dark of space.
