What was supposed to be our first smooth trail run back in the United States quickly turned into another overlanding mishap when we sliced a sidewall and de-beaded a tire while climbing a narrow, rocky shelf road outside Phoenix, Arizona. After multiple recoveries and mechanical issues in Baja California Sur, Mexico, we headed into the Arizona backcountry expecting a simple off-road drive up to a historic cabin, but a massive gash, likely from a sharp tree branch, instantly dumped all the air from one of our heavy-duty military tires, leaving our Unimog stranded uphill at an angle with no shoulder and no room for error. In this episode, we tackle a dangerous off-road tire change on a steep mountain shelf road, share our decision-making process in remote terrain, and show what it really takes to handle unexpected breakdowns while overlanding in a heavy expedition vehicle.
