This week at my abandoned general store renovation, it’s getting real.
I spent the week doing the unglamorous but necessary work that comes with restoring a historic abandoned building: planing rough lumber, checking wall cavities for wild animals, cleaning up years of neglect, and replacing one of the old windows that’s been hanging on for far too long.
When you’re renovating an abandoned building by yourself, the small tasks add up fast. Every wall, every board, every detail matters, especially with a major upgrade coming next week. There’s pressure that comes with taking on a full historic renovation project, and this week I felt it.
This is what real DIY renovation looks like. It’s not always dramatic reveals or before-and-afters. Sometimes it’s prep work, structural checks, cleanup, and making sure the building is ready for what comes next.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s actually like to restore an abandoned property, renovate a historic general store, or take on a full DIY home renovation alone, this is it.
Next week is a big one.
