But the goal was not help. The goal was to trick the AI into giving away huge discounts. AI agents are spreading everywhere across customer support. Companies say they reduce costs, resolve issues faster, and replace large support teams. Klarna even claimed its AI handled two thirds of all support chats within a month and was doing the work of 700 employees. On paper, it looked like a massive win. But the reality has been much messier. Research shows 75 percent of customers still prefer speaking to a real human. Over half say AI support frustrates them, and nearly half say they do not trust the information these systems provide. And sometimes the problems get even stranger. A Chevrolet dealership chatbot was convinced to sell a 2024 Chevy Tahoe for one dollar. Another company’s AI began insulting its own employer. In one case, a small business chatbot was manipulated into generating an 80 percent discount code. AI can work well for simple automation like refunds or quick account changes. But when companies give these systems too much freedom, things start going off the rails. And some customers are starting to notice.
