In 1807, a young woman was found drowned in North Carolina’s Deep River. Jonathan Lewis was charged with murder and jailed. If you’re familiar with murder ballads, this story is not new to you. You’ve probably heard Doc Watson sing Little Omie Wise and tell that exact story. In that recording, Doc’s final lyric is: “Though he made no confession, they carried him to jail No friends nor relations would go on his bail” What Doc fails to mention is Jonathan Lewis didn’t stay in jail long, he escaped. In fact, there is no surviving record of Jonathan Lewis ever standing trial or being convicted. For centuries, we’ve heard what happened to Omie Wise. We’ve heard her plead. We’ve heard her drown. But the real Naomi Wise never left us a single word. Instead, a 200 year old poem penned by a local pre-teen will help us unravel what really happened. Tonight, on the B Part.
