Early on with almost every bluegrass guitar student I teach, we do some practical ear training. And I don't mean memorizing intervals using Here Comes The Bride and the Star Wars theme. There are already plenty of sketchy apps that will help you do that. Besides, that’s not actually the skill most musicians are using when they figure out a melody by ear. There’s a different process happening there. And once you understand that process, you can start hearing a melody and finding it on your instrument much faster.
