In the summer of 1933, a father and son drove through the Jim Crow South carrying a recording machine and a mission, save America’s disappearing folk music before it vanished forever. Through the farms, back roads, and prison yards, they looked for songs untouched by radio, Tin Pan Alley, and modern life altogether. And in a Louisiana prison, they found one of the most powerful singers in American history, Huddie Ledbetter, better known today as Lead Belly. The story that followed would become folk music legend. But legends have a way of smoothing over the rough parts. Because the men who helped preserve Lead Belly’s voice also helped package him for white audiences. They promoted his prison songs, his criminal past, and his rawness. They argued that prisons held music that was more pure, more authentic, less contaminated by modern culture. And that raises an ugly question, did the Lomaxes rescue American folk music or did they help invent a version of it that depended on Black suffering to make it seem real?
