So the guitar tab epidemic is real. I admit it. Bluegrass guitarists that can’t play a single tune without looking at a piece of tab are probably the greatest threat to this nation. Which is a funny thing to say because I am a very literate musician. I can read and write sheet music easily, fluently. You might have seen me transcribing solos live on stream or writing out some tab real quick on a lesson. I think written music is useful. But I don’t bring a binder to the jam. I don’t use an iPad on the gig. I learn new tunes by ear. To me, written music is a drafting tool. It’s a way to store and communcate ideas but it’s not the music itself. So maybe the real question is: How do you use written music without letting it weaken your musicianship?
