The Sicilian is a very concrete opening. c5 is a move designed to prevent d4. In many ways, the Sicilian is a classical opening. Instead of playing e5, black achieves the same goal by playing on the flank. Unlike hyper-modern openings, such as the Pirc, it prevents an immediate d4 and gives black central control without structural symmetry. When white prepares d4 with Nf3, which is the so-called open Sicilian, an interesting trade happens. Black trades the c5 pawn for the d4 pawn, thus gaining a central pawn majority. In most endgames and late middlegames, that will be an advantage for black. The main move against the Sicilian by far is the flexible Nf3. This leads to all the main lines, Najdorf, Dragon, Kan, Taimanov, and our repertoire, Sveshnikov and Rossolimo. It all depends on what black plays on move 2.
The Sicilian Defence was first analysed by Giulio Polerio in his 1594 manuscript on chess and it has been played ever since. It never became one of the main lines until mid 20-th century, though. Today, it's the main defense to e4 along with the classical 1...e5.
There are many different Sicilians. Same rules and strategic patterns aren't applicable to all of them, and each Sicilian has it's own ideas and theory. In this introduction to the Sicilian I'm going to explain the basics, but I will cover each separate variation of the Sicilian in detail in future videos - 47 in total!
