Can we actually survive an Ontario winter with wood heat? 🇨🇦
This was our first full heating season living in our dream homestead, and the Outdoor Wood Boiler (OWB) was put to the ultimate test. From the first frost in the fall to the arctic -40°C temps in the dead of winter, we relied entirely on wood to keep our new home warm.
The verdict? I need MORE wood! In today’s video, I’m headed out into the woodlot to fell a standing dead Sugar Maple. It’s prime firewood, but it takes work to get it from the forest to the boiler. I’ll be using my Stihl chainsaw to drop and buck the tree, followed by some serious "homestead cardio" using my splitting axe and maul to get the wood ready for next winter.
What we cover in this video:
Wood Consumption: Exactly how many cords we burned this season.
Radiant Heat Performance: How the boiler handled our in-floor heating and radiant slab.
Tree Felling & Processing: Dropping a hardwood maple and prep for the next seasoning cycle.
The Reality of OWB Life: Is it worth the labor for the "simple life"?
Whether you're curious about hydronic outdoor furnaces, building a custom homestead, or just love the sound of a Stihl in the woods, thanks for joining me on the journey!
