Punks Force

A component of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division has been given mobilization order, which is the step before a go order. 1,000 soldiers of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, the 82nd’s immediate response force, also known as the “ready brigade,” can deploy within 18 hours of getting the go order and could be airlifting aboard a conga line of C-17s from their base at Fort Bragg to war zone any day now. The 1,000 paratroopers are in addition to the two U.S. Marine Corps Amphibious Ready Groups that have been ordered to join Epic Fury. The TRIPOLI ARG was last reported to be docked at the base on the island of Diego Garcia in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and the BOXER ARG is just over halfway to Hawaii after leaving its homeport of San Diego five days ago. All told, once the 82nd Airborne gets the go order and the BOXER arrives on station, which is roughly two weeks away, there will be approximately 6,000 boots to put on the ground. Whether that means we seize Kharg Island or secure the Iranian shoreline along the Strait of Hormuz or lock down nuclear sites in Iran is unknown, but their presence in theater gives CENTCOM tactical leverage Admiral Cooper otherwise wouldn’t have.
