From this trauma emerged a lasting belief: weak central authority invites chaos, humiliation, and domination. That lesson shaped the Communist victory in 1949, when the CCP reunified the mainland while the defeated Nationalists fled to Taiwan, leaving the civil war unresolved. Over time, Taiwan evolved separately, becoming a prosperous democracy whose success rested on openness, markets, and self-rule. This widening political and economic gap made reunification harder, while U.S. support and Taiwan’s growing identity deepened Beijing’s fear of permanent separation. For China’s leaders, Taiwan is now not only unfinished history, but a narrowing window—where delay threatens unity itself.
