Though often improvised in design and produced in limited numbers, these vehicles proved the practical value of mobile, armored air defense. They could keep pace with advancing tanks and deliver high volumes of fire against low-flying aircraft, all while protecting their crews from infantry small arms and strafing attacks. The idea of a dedicated armored air-defense vehicle did not disappear after the war. In the mid-1950s, the newly established Bundeswehr, drawing upon wartime lessons, called for the development of a modern successor to the Flakpanzers. This effort ultimately resulted in the Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer 1 Gepard, a sophisticated self-propelled anti-aircraft system built on a modified Leopard 1 chassis. Armed with twin 35 mm (1.37 in) Oerlikon KDA cannons and equipped with integrated radar systems, the Gepard is without a doubt one of the most well-known and recognizable vehicles of its type to have ever existed, and thanks to the successive upgrades, it remained effective well beyond the fall of the Berlin Wall.
