I use this wine key: Forge de Laguiole Ebony
The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
It is one of the most exciting, trendy, and delicious wine styles, and it can really only be produced in one country – here in Germany.
Kabinett wines often combine laser-sharp acidity with juicy sweetness. The wine is also low in alcohol, but it impresses with amazing flavor and concentration.
Today, I am going to take a deep dive into Riesling Kabinetts. I will explain what makes them delicious, and I am going to taste an amazing lineup, including the world-famous Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Kabinett
One of the most expensive white wine producers in the world.
The German term Kabinett goes back to the term Cabinet, which was used for a special wine cellar that contained the best wines. It might actually go back to the Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau region.
In 1971, it became one of the lowest of the six Prädikate – Quality wines that had not been chaptalized.
The grapes have to be riper and sweeter than the ones used for normal Qualitätswein, but less sweet than the ones used for Spätlese, Auslese, etc.
However, the Prädikats Level depends on the sweetness of the grapes, not on the sweetness of the wine. So you can find dry, off-dry, and sweet Kabinetts, depending on the winemaker’s decision.
Yeah, I know … German wine law is very complicated.
Many Kabinetts are low in alcohol with levels in the single digits, and residual sugar levels of 40 g/l plus, but there are also dry Kabinetts with 13 abv +.
I have a complete lineup with several different styles, but most of them are on the sweeter side.
