Not because it’s perfect. It absolutely isn’t. In fact, I nearly didn’t review Qidi at all this year. I skipped the Q1. I sent the Q4 back after heater concerns. When you work from home - where your kids live - you don’t take unnecessary risks. So when the Q4 Max landed and I ended up effectively beta testing it for months… I wasn’t optimistic. And yet. There’s something interesting happening here. Because beneath the rough firmware, awkward decisions, copied UI elements, and the occasional “why is it like this?” moment… there’s a printer that sits dangerously close to the perfect middle ground people claim they want. Big CoreXY build volume. Open software access. Fluid interface. No ecosystem lockdown. Engineering material capability. Stock profiles that genuinely deliver. So what’s the catch? In this review I assemble it properly, deal with early firmware quirks, test first layer consistency edge-to-edge on that 390mm bed, run multi-material through the Qidi Box, push full-height prints, test chamber behaviour with and without the Polar Cooler, examine filament waste, belt tension access, UI polish, network connectivity, and what living with this machine actually feels like over time - not just on the first benchy. Because this isn’t about whether it looks familiar. It’s about execution. Is 390 x 390 x 340 genuinely useful - or just big on paper? Does open access actually give you more freedom? Is the Qidi Box ready for serious multi-material use? Are the firmware quirks ironed out before launch? And why, despite doing so much right, isn’t Qidi dominating this space? There’s a lot to like here. There are also decisions that will divide opinion immediately. If you’re trying to figure out whether the Q4 Max is worth buying, how it performs in real-world workshop use, whether Qidi have matured as a brand, and where this sits in the large-format CoreXY market - that’s what this video explores.
